PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Christian Taugner (Roselle, Ill.) tossed seven scoreless innings and senior J.J. Franco (New York, N.Y.) racked up six hits to lead the Brown baseball team to a sweep over Yale, 7-0 and 12-7, in Friday's doubleheader on Senior Day at Murray Stadium.

Brown improves to 12-20 overall and 6-12 in Ivy League play, while Yale drops to 17-21 on the season and 9-9 in league action.

In the first game, Taugner threw seven scoreless innings for the complete game victory to go along with 10 strikeouts. Franco went 3-for-4 at the plate to highlight four multi-hit performances, while sophomore Kevin Guthrie (Sarasota, Fla.) and junior Will Marcal (Lexington, Mass.) drove in two runs apiece.

Brown opened with two runs in the first, when Marcal drove a two-out single to right field to send in a pair of runs for the early lead.

After three scoreless innings, the Bears tacked on four runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth. Junior Dan Kerr (Westfield, N.J.) doubled in a run before Guthrie followed with an RBI single to center field. From there, rookie Marc Sredojevic (Mendham, N.J.) scored on an error, before senior Wes Van Boom (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to give the home side the lead, 6-0.

Brown added another run on an RBI single by Guthrie in the sixth, before Taugner sent down the Bulldogs in order to complete the shutout.

In the second game, Guthrie allowed three earned runs over six innings as the starter, while junior Chris Smith (Colleyville, Texas) pitched two scoreless frames in relief to earn the win. Franco paced the offense with three hits, and four other players logged two hits each, while Marcal and Sredojevic registered two RBI.

Once again, Brown jumped out to an early lead, scoring two in the first on sacrifice hits from Kerr and Sredojevic, before Guthrie recorded an RBI single in the third for the advantage, 3-0.

Yale responded with two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Bears answered right back with four runs on a trio of hits in the bottom half of the frame. Nevertheless, Yale continued to press back with five runs over the next two innings to even the score at 7-7 after six innings.

Brown regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh when senior Daniel Massey (Greensboro, N.C.) hit a two-out double to left center for the one-run lead, 8-7.

The Bears added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a two-run single by Marcal to push the home side in front, 12-7. Junior Taylor Wright (Berwyn, Pa.) came in for the final three outs to seal the victory and two-game sweep.
