Taugner Named Ivy League Baseball Pitcher and Co-Rookie of the Week

PRINCETON, N.J. – After an impressive performance at top-ranked South Carolina on Sunday, freshman right-hander Christian Taugner (Roselle, Ill.) of the Brown University baseball team was named the Ivy League Pitcher and Co-Rookie of the Week, announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.

In his first career start, Taugner limited No. 1 South Carolina to seven hits over seven innings of work in a 1-0 loss, walking two and striking out three. In the bottom of the fourth inning, a walk and a single followed by a fielder's choice put men on second and third. Taugner got the Gamecocks' Elliott Caldwell to fly out, plating the run and again putting men on second and third. But that was it for South Carolina, as Taugner got the next two batters out to escape the jam.

Taugner is the first Bear to be named Pitcher and Rookie of the Week since Anthony Galan shared both awards on March 15, 2011. Taugner is the first Brown player to be sole Pitcher of the Week since Matt Kimball on March 8, 2011.
