Baseball Edged at No. 1 South Carolina, 1-0

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Freshman Christian Taugner (Roselle, Ill.) tossed seven innings of one-run ball to keep the Bears in the game, but the Brown baseball team was edged in a pitcher's dual by top-ranked South Carolina, 1-0, in Sunday afternoon's series finale at Carolina Stadium.

Brown moves to 0-3 overall, while South Carolina remained undefeated at 15-0 to start the season.

Taugner took the mound for Brown as the starter and allowed just one run in seven innings to go along with three strikeouts in his collegiate debut. Senior Lucas Whitehill (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) pitched a perfect eighth inning in relief. Wil Crowe threw eight shutout innings for the Gamecocks to earn the win.

Senior Daniel Massey (Greensboro, N.C.) led the offense with his second double of the season, while junior Dan Kerr (Westfield, N.J.), senior J.J. Franco (New York, N.Y.) and sophomore Tim McKeithan (Arden, N.C.) collected one hit apiece.

Brown threatened in the top of the second as Massey hit a one-out double to right and McKeithan followed with single to center, but Carolina turned a double play to escape without any damage.

After three scoreless frames, the Gamecocks scored the lone run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth, when Elliott Caldwell drove in Grayson Greiner on a sacrifice fly to center field for the one-run lead.

From there, Crowe allowed just two hits over the next four innings, before Joel Seddon came in for the ninth to earn the save.

The Bears return to action on Friday, March 14 when the open up a three-game set at George Mason at 3 p.m.
