AUBURN, ALABAMA - The Brown baseball team (1-5) dropped a 6-0 contest to Auburn (11-3) this afternoon in the second game of a three-day series against the Tigers.
Auburn scored three runs on three hits in the third inning to take the early lead. The Bears came close to getting one back In the fifth inning when junior Wes Van Boom (Trabuco Canyon, CA) walked and junior Daniel Massey (Greensboro, NC) singled to the left side. Sophomore Nick Fornaca (San Diego, CA) then put down a bunt to move both runners into scoring position, however, the inning ended when a line drive to second was caught, leaving both runners on base.
Auburn continued to add to its lead, scoring another run in the fifth inning and an additional two runs in the seventh. The Bears continued to fight into the final inning, when Van Boom singled up the middle, followed by Massey, who singled to right field. Fornaca then hit a single to the left side to load the bases, but the Bears were unable to score.
Massey had a strong performance at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two singles. Senior John Sheridan (Palo Alto, CA) hit a triple in the eighth inning, and sophomore Will Marcal (Lexington, MA), Van Boom and Fornaca each singled for the Bears. Sophomore Dave St. Lawrence (Thompson, CT) received the loss for the Bears, pitching seven innings and giving up five earned runs on ten hits and two walks, whilst striking out two batters. Junior Lucas Whitehill (Manhattan Beach, CA) relieved St. Lawrence on the mound, pitching one inning and allowing no runs, no hits, and two walks.
The Brown baseball team will look to end the three-day series versus Auburn with a win as they take on the Tigers again tomorrow, March 10th, at 12:00 pm CT.
