Brown Notches First Win of the Season vs. Nicholls State, 5-4 in 12 Innings

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Brown baseball team notched its first win of the 2013 season in dramatic fashion, defeating Nicholls State, 5-4 in 12 innings in the first game of a doubleheader from Alex Brown Stadium on the campus of Louisiana State University Saturday afternoon.

Brown moved to 1-1 overall with the victory; Nicholls State fell to 6-4.

The Bears broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the 12th when sophomore Will Marcal scored Matt DeRenzi with a single through the right side.  Marcal scored the game winning run later in the inning on a wild pitch.

Sophomore right hander Dave St. Lawrence gave the Bears a valiant effort from the mound, pitching 8.1 innings, allowing just three runs (two earned) and striking out five.  But it was Eddie Fitzpatrick (1-0) who earned the win, tossing two innings of relief, allowing just one unearned run while striking out four.

Offensively, each player in the Bears' starting lineup notched at least one hit, and the team had 12 total.  Senior center fielder John Sheridan had a team-high two RBI.

Brown scored all three of its runs in regulation in the second on an RBI single by freshman Tim McKeithan and Sheridan's two RBI single.  A Nicholls State sac fly in the bottom of the ninth forced extra innings.

Brown fell to LSU, 7-1 in the second game of its doubleheader on Saturday.  Click here to read more.
