PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown baseball team picked up an important doubleheader split against Rolfe Division leader Dartmouth on Saturday at Murray Stadium. Game one took extra innings, but after the Bears loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth, rookie third baseman Nick Fornaca (San Diego, Calif.) worked a walk for a 4-3 Bruno win. It was the second-straight game that the Bears walked off with a victory after down UConn, 8-7, on Wednesday. Brown fell in game two, 9-5.
With Brown (7-22, 4-6) entering Saturday's doubleheader just a game behind Dartmouth (10-15, 5-5) in the Rolfe division standings, the Bears need to keep pace with the Big Green.
In a thrilling extra-inning affair, Fornaca went 1-for-3 with two RBI including the game-winning walk, while sophomore left fielder Daniel Massey (Greensboro, N.C.) went 3-for-3 and sophomore catcher Wes Van Boom (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) was 2-for-4 with two runs.
In game two, Brown worked its way to a 5-2 lead after trailing 1-0 in after the top of the third but the Dartmouth bats came alive in the seventh and eight innings, plating two, then five runs to take control, 9-5.
Sophomore second baseman J.J. Franco (New York, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI and junior first baseman Cody Slaughter (New Port Richey, Fla.) was 2-for-5 with three RBI, but Dartmouth reliever Thomas Olson threw two scoreless frames to quell any Brown comeback.
Brown and Dartmouth will be back at in on Sunday with top spot in the Rolfe Division on the line with another doubleheader starting at noon.
