San Jose State Tops Brown, 9-4

San Jose, Calif. – Brown jumped out to an early 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but San Jose State scored five runs in the next two frames to take control of the game and come away with a 9-4 win versus the Bears. It was Bruno's fifth game of its West Coast road trip.

Senior captain Matt Colantonio (Garden City, N.Y.) went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two walks and rookie Matt DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J.) was 2-for-4 with a run and stolen base, but it was not enough as the Spartans (16-7) tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win over the Bears (2-11).

Brown led off the game with back-to-back doubles by John Sheridan (Palo Alto, Calif) and Colantonio and took an early 1-0 lead. SJSU responded quickly however, knotting the game at one in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Tim Quiery.

The Bears loaded the bases in the top of the fourth, and a walk by senior Pete Greskoff (Paoli, Pa.) gave Brown a 2-1 lead. Spartan pitcher Andy Hennessey was able to work his way out of further trouble however, limiting Brown to just the one run.

The San Jose State offense came alive in the next two innings, tallying two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to regain and expand its lead.

Bruno closed within two just before the stretch, getting runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Senior Ryan Zrenda (Old Lyme, Conn.) led off the sixth with a single, advanced to second on a fielder's choice and got to third on a passed ball. Senior Josh Feit (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) took care of the rest, belting a sacrifice fly to plate Zrenda.

In the seventh, Colantonio added his second RBI of the day with a single to center, which plated freshman J.J. Franco (New York, N.Y.) and brought the score to 6-4.

That was as close as the Bears would get as SJSU scored three in the bottom half of the seventh and closed out the 9-4 win.

Brown finishes up its six-game West Coast, Spring Break road trip on Wednesday night, March 30, against the Spartans at 9 p.m. EST.
