Santa Clara, Calif. – Brown continued its difficult West Coast road swing on Monday night at Santa Clara and faced a hot Bronco offense which had 34 runs in its past three games. Santa Clara exploded again; plating 10 runs in the first three innings on their way to a 17-3 win.
A three-run home run by SCU's Matt Ozanne highlighted a six-run first inning for the Broncos.
A sacrifice fly in the second and three more RBI in the third put Brown in early 10-0 hole, which they could not fight out of.
The Bears did continue to battle however, getting their first run of the game in the top of sixth. Sophomore leadoff hitter John Sheridan, who went 2-for-5 with a run scored, got on base with a two-out single. Senior Ryan Zrenda followed with a double on a 3-0 count, which plated Sheridan and put Brown on the board.
Santa Clara responded as it normally has during this four-game set, getting eight hits and crossing five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Brown was able to get two runs back in the top of the eighth inning. Zrenda led off the fame with a double to left and then advanced to third on a fielder's choice. Mike DiBiase, who walked after Zrenda and advanced to second on the FC, also found himself in scoring position with Cody Slaughter at-bat. Slaughter was able to put a ball in play towards third and a throwing error allowed both Zrenda and DiBiase to score.
SCU starter, Powell Fansler went 5.2 innings, allowing just two hits and one run. The Bronco offense finished with 22 hits in the game.
Zrenda, who moved up to the two-hole in the lineup, finished 2-for-5 with a run and a RBI.
Brown plays at San Jose State tomorrow night at 6 p.m. EST.
