Women's Swimmers Grab First in 15 of 16 Events in 227-63 Win Over Penn

Philadelphia, PA - The Brown women's swimming team improved to 3-1 in Ivy League competition with a convincing 227-63 victory at Penn on Sunday afternoon. The meet started off with Brown taking first and second place in the first four events and the women only lost one event, the 100 breast, in which they took a second place finish.

The 200 medley relay team of freshman Katie Fay (Summit, NJ), junior Kelsey Hiatt (Denver, CO), senior Lauren Pace (Oak Brook, IL) and freshman Emily McCoy (Anchorage, AK) finished with a time of 1:50.01, grabbing first place. The Bears finished the next three events with a 1-2 sweep, as senior Jenn Lears (Towson, MD), freshman Vanessa Beary (Cincinnati, OH) and freshman Jean Lee (Valrico, FL) grabbed first-third in the 1650 free. Junior Dawn Chuck (Kingston, Jamaica), freshman Liz Daniels (Pittsburgh, PA) and junior Judy Koonstra (Uxbridge, Ontario) finished a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 free, while Fay and freshman Shauna Powell (Grand Cayman, Cayman) took a 1-2 sweep in the 100 back.

Although freshman Laura Mosca (Charlottesville, VA) missed a first place finish in the 100 breast by 10 seconds, the Bears did claim 2nd-4th place in that event with senior Blythe Wygonik (Madison, CT) finishing in third and junior Megahn Purvis (Shorewood, WI) finishing in fourth.

The other first place finishers for Brown were junior Tinka Dancevic (Zagreb, Croatia) in the 200 fly (2:04.31). Daniels grabbed first place in the 50 free with a time :24.12, while Chuck took first in the 100 free in :52.37. Freshman diver Jen Sluder (Concord, MA) won both the 1M and the 3M dives with scores of 278.85 and 283.88 respectively. Fay grabbed first in the 200 back in 2:07.90, while Pace took first place in the 100 fly in :57.92 and junior Suzanna Drodge (Torbay, Newfoundland) won the 500 free in 5:06.82. Hiatt won both the 200 breast and the 200 IM with times of 2:22.91 and 2:08.10 respectively and the 400 free relay team of freshman Lindsay Hoban (Duxbury, MA), Beary, Lears and Daniels won that event in 3:35.84.

The Bears continue action on February 3 when they host Cornell and Columbia in a dual meet with the Big Red and the Lions. The meet begins at 12 noon.
