Brown Women's Ski Team Set to Compete in Nationals

March 11, 2002

The Regional Championships were concluded Monday February 25. There will be representation from 50 schools of 20 different states. 75 teams with 355 athletes will compete to be the National Champions. Competition begins on Tuesday March 12 at Waterville Valley, NH.

Brown is coming off a strong performance at the Eastern Collegiate Ski Conference's Regionals. The Bears earned 3rd place, which is the second best finish in school history. Three racers placed in the top 20, including Doria Dibona, Elizabeth Dibona, who placed 6th and 7th, respectively. Molly Sheinberg earned a 19th place overall finish.

The Bears anxiously await the start to competition. Brown has been solid all season long, posting strong results in all races this year. Aside from one race, the Bears captured top three finishes in the slalom and giant slalom in each carnival they raced this season.

Much of Brown's success can be attributed to the balance of this year's team. Head Coach Karen Finocchio comments on the widespread talent of her team. "We have five talented skiers as opposed to one "hot shot" racer. Any one of our skiers can score points for this team."

During the Nationals, Brown will be in 'familiar territory' in two respects. First, this year's host of the competition is Waterville Valley, NH, which is Brown's home hill. Finocchio feels confident that the home hill advantage will prove beneficial throughout the week's competition. "The girls have trained and skied this hill for many years. Nothing should be unfamiliar." The other advantage for the Bears is the competition, as five schools that qualified, are constant opponents for Brown during the regular season.
