Bears Win the Giant Slalom, Take Fourth in the Slalom at BC Carnival

Ascutney Mountain, VT - The Brown women's ski team competed in the Boston College Carnival over the weekend and posted its second victory of the season in the Giant Slalom. After winning the first three Slalom races of the season, the Bears posted a fourth-place finish at the BC Canival, while missing two of their top skiers. Brown won the Giant Slalom with a time of 299.61, 3:35 ahead of second-place UMass. In the Slalom, the Bears posted a combined time of 362.30, 3:61 behind first-place Boston College.

Individually, junior Hilary Swaffield (Wolfeboro, NH) and sophomore Kelly O'Hear (Niagara Falls, NY) both had great weekends for the Bears. O'Hear finished in second in the Slalom with a time of 1:55.42, just .03 seconds behind first place. Swaffield took 14th in the Slalom with a time of 2:02.50, as Brown's only other finisher in the top 15. In the Giant Slalom, Swaffield took second with a time of 1:38.56, 1:88 out of first, while O'Hear took third with a time of 1:38.80.

Other finishers for Brown in the Giant Slalom included sophomore Janet Marley-Mauzy (Westport, CT), who took ninth with a time of 1:42.25, and freshman Sophie Elgort (New York, NY), who took 14th with a time of 1:43.68. Freshman Mallory Taub (Waitsfield, VT) earned a 22nd-place finish with a time of 1:44.46, while junior Jamie Johnson (North Kingstown, RI) was right behind her with a 23-place finish, clocking in at 1:44.70. Freshman Meaghan Casey (Bristol, CT) followed Taub and Johnson, posting a time of 1:44.72, good for 24th.

Other top finishers for Brown in the Slalom included Marley-Mauzy, who took 16th with a time of 2:04.38, Elgort, who finished in 19th with a time of 2:04.70, Taub, who took 22nd with a time of 2:05.40, Casey, who took 28th with a time of 2:08.88, and Johnson, who took 29th with a time of 2:08.92.

The Bears continue action next weekend when they participate in the Colby-Sawyer Carnival at Mount Sunapee, NH on Friday, February 18, and the St. Anselm Carnival at Pat's Peak, NH on Saturday, February 19. They are the final regular season carnvals for the Bears before the ECSC Regional Championships.
