Feb. 8, 2006

MT CRANMORE, NH/LOON MOUNTAIN, NH - The Brown women's ski team won its second carnival of the season, posting a first place finish in the Slalom at the UConn Carnival, held at Mt. Cranmore, one day after finishing in fourth place in the Giant Slalom at the MIT Carnival, held at Loon Mountain. With the win on Sunday, the Bears are in third place in the Macconnell Division with 19 points, just six points out of first and four points out of second.

Junior Kelly O'Hear (Niagara Falls, NY) led Brown, taking second in the Giant Slalom on Saturday with a time of 1:51.04, before winning the Slalom on Sunday with a time of 1:16.65, a full second ahead of the second-place skier, which is unheard of in the competitive Macconell Division.

Junior Janet Marley-Mauzy (Westport, CT) was the only other Brown skier in the top 15 in the Giant Slalom, as she finished in 15th with a time of 1:55.62. Sophomore Sophie Elgort (New York, NY) in 18th (1:56.68), senior Jamie Johnson (North Kingstown, RI) in 20th (1:57.50), and sophomore Mallory Taub (Waitsfield, VT) in 22nd (1:58.05) rounded out the top five skiers for Brown.

On Sunday, the Bears rebounded with three other skiers, in addition to O'Hear, placing in the top-15. Sophomore Meaghan Casey (Bristol, CT) finised in 10th place with a time of 1:21.17, while Mauzy was right behind in 11th with a time of 1:22.03. Elgort was the fourth Brown skier in the top 15, finishing in 14th with a time of 1:22.40. Taub rounded out Brown's top-five skiers with a time of 1:26.14, good for 26th.

The Bears continue action this weekend when they take part in the Boston College Carnival at Ascutney Mountain in Vermont. Slalom events are on Saturday with the Giant Slalom taking place on Sunday.
