WACHUSETT MT, MA/LOON MT, NH - The Brown women's skiing team hosted its carnival on Friday afternoon, coming in fourth in the slalom competition at Wachusett Mountain. The next day, Brown took place in the MIT carnival at Loon Mountain and took second in the giant slalom. With the finishes over the weekend, the Bears remain in fourth place in the MacConnell Division standings, but are now just one point out of third place.
On Friday, Brown was led by senior Kelly O'Hear (Niagara Falls, NY), who finished in fourth with a time of 1:30.55. O'Hear was also in the top five at the start of the race again, with a time of 64.19. Freshman Elisa Handbury (Sydney Australia) continued her impressive rookie campaign with a 12th place finish, clocking in at 1:33.70, while junior Sophie Elgort (New York, NY) finished in 13th with a time of 1:33.81. Junior Meaghan Casey (Bristol, CT) also had a strong race, taking 17th place with a time of 1:35.58, while junior Mallory Taub (Waitsfield, VT) rounded out Brown's top five in 26th with a time of 1:38.73.
In the giant slalom the next day, O'Hear won her first race of the season, clocking in at 1:59.06. Sophomore Anna Bengtson (St. Johnsbury, VT) took eighth with a time of 2:01.48, while senior Janet Marley-Mauzy (Westport, CT) finished in 16th with a time of 2:05.13. Handbury was next for Brown in 18th with a time of 2:05.92, while Taub rounded out the Bears' top five in 19th with a time of 2:06.04. O'Hear continued her string of staying in the top five at the start of the race, this time in second with a 58.32.
The Bears have one more carnival, next weekend's BC Carnival at Mt. Ascutney, VT, before they will take part in post-season championships.
