Mt. Cranmore, NH - The Brown women's skiing team opened the season with a sixth place finish at the UConn Carnival giant slalom on Saturday, January 11th. The Bears followed up the next day with a fourth place finish in the slalom. Racing in her first collegiate event, freshman Elisa Handbury (Sydney Australia) led the Bears, finishing in eighth in the giant slalom and in 15th in the slalom.
Handbury's time of 2:23.32 in the giant slalom was the Bears' best time as senior Janet Marley-Mauzy (Westport, CT) finished in 14th with a time of 2:26.24, the only other Brown skier to finish in the top 15. Junior Sophie Elgort (New York, NY) posted a time of 2:31.34, good for 23rd, while junior Meaghan Casey (Bristol, CT) came in 30th with a time of 2:33.99. Senior captain Kelly O'Hear (Niagara Falls, NY) was among the top five at the start of the race, but she failed to finish after falling in her second run.
The next day in the slalom, Elgort and Handbury were the lone Brown finishers in the top-15, as Elgort finished in 14th with a time of 1:41.21, followed by Handbury in 15th with a time of 1:41.51. Sophomore Anna Bengtson (St. Johnsbury, VT) came in 16th with a time of 1:41.84, while Casey posted a time of 1:42.78, good for 20th. O'Hear was again one of the top five at the start of the race, but another fall caused her to finish in 36th.
Brown will look to get back on the winning track this weekend when it travels to Waterville Valley, NH to participate in the Plymouth State Carnival.
