Mount Sunapee, NH - The Brown women's skiing team opened up its 2009 season on January 9th and 10th at the Colby Sawyer Carnival at Mount Sunapee, which has all teams competing in the giant slalom on both days. The Bears took sixth overall behind Colby Saywer, BC, Smith, UMass, and Plymouth State after earning seventh place on day one and sixth place on day two. Freshman Emily Simmons (Buffalo, NY) was Brown's top skier both days, finishing 10th on day one and ninth on day two.
On the first day, Simmons' time of 1:49.25 led the Bears, while senior Anna Bengtson (St. Johnsbury, VT) was 26th with a time of 1:51.80. Sophomore Blaine Martin (Salt Lake City, UT) was the third finisher for the Bears, placing 34th with a total time of 1:53.10, while junior Elisa Handbury (Sydney, Australia) was fourth for Brown, finishing in 38th with a time of 1:53.95. Brown's top skier last year, Krista Consiglio (Bethany, CT) didn't ski, which hurt Brown's scoring.
The next day was more of the same, as Consiglio the fourth-fastest overall at the start of the first run, didn't finish her first run. Simmons one again led Brown, placing ninth with a time of 1:50.90. Martin was 29th with a time of 1:53.46, while Handbury came in 36th with a time of 1:55.73. Bengtson was Brown's fourth finisher, coming in at 40th with a two-run time of 1:56.53.
The Bears are back in action this Friday and Saturday when they travel to Mt. Cranmore, NH to take part in the UConn Carnival, both of which will be slalom races.
