Bears Finish 3rd Overall in First Carnival of the Season

Mount Sunapee, NH - The Brown women's skiing team opened up its 2008 season on January 11th and 12th at the Colby Sawyer Carnival at Mount Sunapee, which has all teams competing in the giant slalom on both days. The Bears took third behind Colby Saywer and UMass on a rain-shortened first day and then finished in fourth behind Colby Sawyer, BC, and UMass on the second day of competition. After the first weekend, Brown stands in third place in the ECSC MacConnell Division, behind Colby Sawyer and UMass. Freshman Krista Consiglio (Bethany, CT) was Brown's top skier both days, finishing second on day one and in ninth on day two.

On the first day, Consiglio's time of 36.72 was .18 behind winner Eliza Hawkins. Junior Anna Bengtson (St. Johnsbury, VT) was second for the Bears, placing 14th with a time of 37.62. Four of Brown's next six skiers were all in the top 40 as senior Meaghan Casey (Bristol, CT) came in 20th with a time of 38.22 and senior Sophie Elgort (New York, NY) was 29th with a time of 38.81. Freshman Blaine Martin (Salt Lake City, UT) took 33rd with a time of 38.92, while sophomore Elisa Handbury (Sydney, Australia) rounded out the top-40 with a time of 39.29.

Despite finishing in fourth place overall on the second day, all nine of Brown's skiers finished in the top 40 individually. Consiglio again led the way with a total time of 1:44.98 for ninth place, while Bengtson finished in 11th with a time of 1:45.84. The Bears' next six finishers all placed between 25th and 34th place with Martin coming in 25th with a time of 1:50.95. Handbury was right behind with a time of 1:51.01. Senior Kimberly Casten (Manhattan Beach, CA) earned a time of 1:53.41 to finish in 31st, while senior Mallory Taub (Waitsfield, VT) took 32nd with a time of 1:53.41. Elgort clocked in at 1:54.57 to finish in 34th. Junior Hannah Brennan (Brookline, MA) rounded out Brown's finishers with a time of 2:02.49 to finish in 49th.

The Bears are back in action this Friday and Saturday when they travel to Mt. Cranmore, NH to take part in the UConn Carnival. Giant Slalom is Friday and the Slalom races will be held on Saturday.
