Mt. Cranmore, NH - The Brown women's skiing team (1-0) opened the 2006 season in style, by taking first in the Giant Slalom at the UConn Carnival at Mt. Cranmore, NH. Rainy weather caused problems for the skiers, with the snow for Friday's Giant Slalom being extremely soft, which made the race slow with several delays for course maintenance. Saturday's Slalom events were canceled due to rain and poor snow conditions and will be made up on Sunday, February 5th at Mt. Cranmore.
Skiing without two of their top three skiers, the Bears turned in an excellent performance on Friday to earn first place in the Giant Slalom. Brown finished .3 ahead of second-place Boston College, and .9 ahead of UMass.
Individually junior Kelly O'Hear (Niagara Falls, NY) finished in second place with a total time of 1:14.42, just .07 out of first place for the day. Sophomore Mallory Taub (Waitsfield, VT) had the best result of her career so far, and finished in seventh place with a time of 1:16.18, while junior Janet Marley-Mauzy (Westport, CT) finished just behind Taub in eighth place with a time of 1:16.28.
The Bears continue action on Saturday and Sunday, January 21st and 22nd, when they compete in the Plymouth State Carnival at Waterville Valley, NH. The Slalom is Saturday, while the Giant Slalom will take place on Sunday.
