OKEMO, Vt. – The Brown skiing team opened the 2014 campaign in grand fashion, sweeping both the slalom and giant slalom events en route to its 22nd consecutive MacConnell Division win this weekend.
On Thursday, junior Amanda Engelhardt (Plymouth, N.H.) finished at the top of the podium for the Bears with a result of 1:29.61 in the slalom. Teammate Natalie Pearl (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) placed second in the event with a mark of 1:31.55. Sylvie Bertrand finished 16th overall in the event, but boasted the fastest second run of any competitor (42.75).
In giant slalom action, Pearl struck for her first collegiate victory as she bested the field with a time of 2:37.87. Brown grabbed two more spots in the top-five as Bertrand (2nd, 2:39.56) and Engelhardt (5th, 2:45.54) excelled in the event. Senior Maria Mastanduno (Hanover, N.H.) placed eighth overall in the giant slalom with a time of 2:47.34.
The Bears aim to extend its winning streak to 24 straight as they compete at the Babson Carnival in Sunapee, N.H. on Friday before hosting the Brown Carnival at Blackwater, N.H. on Saturday.
