
PICO MOUNTAIN, VERMONT – Led by senior Kia Mosenthal (Plymouth, NH), who won a slalom race on Friday and finished second on Saturday, the Brown skiing team opened its 2012 season with a pair of wins in two slalom races held at Pico Mountain, as part of the Castleton Carnival.
Mosenthal led all skiers on Friday, posting a two-run time of 1:37.70, as Brown had four skiers place in the top 10 overall. Sophomore Maria Mastanduno (Hanover, NH) was fifth overall, earning a total time of 1:41.41, while freshman Nika Mosenthal (Plymouth, NH) posted a total time of 1:42.71 to finish seventh overall. Junior Catherine Stewart (Stratton, VT) rounded out Brown's top four skiers with a time of 1:43.04, good for ninth overall. Brown's fifth skier to count in the team standings was sophomore Emma Leblanc (Darien, CT), who earned a time of 2:13.38 and finished 51st overall. Though she was not factored into the total team time, junior Sasha Sassoon (London, England) was 25th overall with a time of 1:49.56.
In Saturday's race, Kia Mosenthal was second overall, posting a two-run time of 1:16.77. Leblanc also finished in the top-10, earning a time of 1:18.64 to finish in ninth place. Brown's final three skiers to factor into the team time were Stewart (13th – 1:19.77), Mastanduno (16th – 1:20.28), and Nika Mosenthal (17th – 1:21.65). Freshman Amanda Engelhardt (West Campton, NH) also had a strong race, earning 27th with a total time of 1:25.28.
