MT. SUNAPEE, NH – The Brown women's ski team opened its 2011 season with a fourth place finish overall in a pair of giant slalom races at Mt. Sunapee. The Bears were fourth on Friday and fifth on Saturday, finishing the weekend with nine total points. Plymouth State (2 points) leads after winning both days, while Colby Sawyer (5 points) and Boston College (5 points) are tied for second overall. Brown was led by freshman Emma Leblanc (Darien, CT), who claimed sixth place both days.
In Friday's race, the Bears had three skiers place in the top 15 overall, as Leblanc took 6th with a two-run time of 1:48.94. Junior Kia Mosenthal (Plymouth, NH) placed 10th overall with a total time of 1:50.27, while junior Emily Simmons (Buffalo, NY) was right behind Mosenthal in 11th place with a total time of 1:50.37. Sophomore Catherine Stewart (Stratton, VT) was Brown's fourth skier to place, earning 33rd place with a total time of 1:56.50. All eight of Brown's skiers finished both of their runs, with freshman Ellen Richardson earning a total time of 2:01.35, sophomore Andrea Radke (St. Louis Park, MN) earning a two-run time of 2:01.39, freshman Maria Mastanduno (Hanover, NH) earning a total time of 2:09.71 and senior Krista Consiglio (Bethany, CT) finishing in 2:56.95. Mastanduno and Consiglio both had one strong run for Brown, as Mastanduno's first run time of 53.59 was 10th overall, while Consiglio's second run time of 57.16 was fourth for the Bears.
On Saturday, Leblanc again led the way, finishing with a total time of 1:54.09, sixth overall, after finishing in the top 10 in both of her runs. Consiglio rebounded from Friay with a 14th-place finish (1:55.94), while Mosenthal finished in 29th (2:00.31). Stewart rounded out Brown's top four skiers in 33rd (2:02.32). Mastanduno (2:04.66), Radke (2:06.56), and Richardson (2:06.58) also finished both of their runs.
Brown continues action on January 14-15 when it travels to Cranmore Mountain to take part in two slalom races.
