Brown Gymnastics Cruises past Springfield, 190.375-183.425

The women's gymnastics team improved to 5-5 on the season with a 190.375-183.425 win over Springfield on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Center. Senior Jayne Finst (Delray Beach, FL) led Brown, winning three of the four events, in addition to the individual all-around.

Brown took a 1-2-3 sweep on the vault, led by Finst's 9.650. Senior Gina Verge (Scituate, MA) followed with a 9.500, while senior Suzanne Schlosser (Tucson, AZ) tied for third with a 9.400.

Brown also had a 1-2-3 sweep on the bars, with Verge leading the Bears with a 9.775. Junior Kelly Moran (Chevy Chase, MD) and sophomore Sarah Cavett (Hixson, TN) tied for second, scoring a 9.700, while Finst grabbed fourth with a 9.550. The 9.700 for Moran and Cavett was a person best for both of them.

Finst led the Bears on a 1-2-3 sweep of the beam, scoring a 9.825. Junior Melissa Forziat (Garden City, NY) took second with a 9.700, while sophomore Mandi Baughman (Exeter, NH) grabbed third with a 9.675.

The Bears dominated the floor exercise, as all six Brown competitors scored higher than any Springfield gymnast. Finst led the way with a 9.900, while Schlosser took second with a 9.775. Forziat and Verge tied for third with a 9.725, while Baughman grabbed fifth with a 9.700. Although freshman Kate Slawsky's (Westborough, MA) 9.650 was dropped, she scored .025 higher than Springfield's highest-scoring gymnast.

Finst scored a 38.925 in the all-around competition to lead all all-around competitors, while Verge placed second in the all-around with a 38.125.

The Bears continue action on Sunday, February 22nd when they host Rhode Island and MIT in a 1:00 p.m. meet.
