Providence, RI - The gymnastics team came away with a second place finish closing out the day with a 181.950 mark in their 2005 home opener. Southern Connecticut took first place with a 185.475 mark and MIT finished with a 176.425 mark. Junior Amber Smith (Fort Myers, FL) lead the Bears, finishing the all-around with a 36.950 giving her second place.
In the vault Smith posted the highest score in the event finishing with a 9.375 while freshman Sarah Durning (Roswell, GA) had Brown's second highest score 9.250, having her finish in a two way tie for fourth.
The Bears posted a 46.200 team mark on bars having them finish first. Junior Sarah Cavett (Chattanooga, TN) placed first with a 9.575 mark while senior Kelly Moran (Chevy Chase, MD) posted a 9.425 for a second place finish. Smith and junior Jessica Pouchet (Miami, FL) both came in fifth with a 9.100 mark.
In their toughest event of the day Brown finished the beam with a team score of 42.150, for a third place finish. Freshman Jessica Pestronk (Grand Blanc, MI) turned in the Bear's best performance, turning in a 8.975 mark while Smith recorded a 8.800 score.
The Bears quickly recovered taking first on the next event, the floor exercise taking a 2-3-4-5 rankings. Senior Melissa Forziat (Garden City, NY) led the Bears, coming in second with a 9.700, while Smith took third with a9.675 mark. Durning and Pouchet rounding out the scoring for the Bears posting a 9.600 and 9.575 respectively.
The Bears will return to action Sunday, February 20, when they will host Yale and Bridgeport for a 1:00 meet.
