Gymnastics Defeats MIT, 186.200-173.450

The Brown women's gymnastics team improved its record to 1-3 on the season with a 186.2-173.45 victory over MIT. Junior Jayne Finst (Delray Beach, FL) led the way with four first place finishes, including one in the individual all-around, and one second place finish.

The Bears swept 1-5 in both the vault and the bars, taking 1-3 on the beam, and 1-4 on the floor exercise, as well as taking the top three all-around scores. Finst scored a 9.350, leading all competition on the vault. She was followed by freshman Amber Smith (Fort Myers, FL) with a 9.200, sophomore Melissa Forziat (Garden City, NY) with a 9.125, and freshman Jessica Pouchett (Miami, FL) and junior Gina Verge (Scituate, MA), who each scored a 9.050.

Verge led the Bears on the bars with a 9.625. She was followed by Finst and freshman Sarah Cavett (Chattanooga, TN), each with a 9.500, Pouchett with a 9.450, and Smith with a 9.375.

Finst led all competition on the beam, scoring a 9.325. Senior Sarah Keil took second with a 9.250 and Forziat earned a third place finish with a 9.150. Smith placed fifth for the Bears on this event with an 8.800.

Finst again led all competition on the floor with a 9.775, while Forziat took second with a 9.625. Smith (9.500) and Verge (9.450) took third and fourth respectively, completing the 1-4 sweep.

The all-around competition was won by Finst with a 37.950, while Smith took second with a 36.875. Verge finished third in the all-around with a 36.425.

The Bears continue action on Sunday, January 19, hosting Springfield and Yale in the 2003 home-opener at 1:00 p.m. in the Pizzitola Center.
