The Brown women's gymnastics team (0-2) opened the 2004 season in a tri-meet at North Carolina State took third in the meet with a 185.625. NC State won the meet with a 191.250, edging out William & Mary, which scored a 191.200.
Brown was led by senior Gina Verge (Scituate, MA), who took third in the all-around with a 37.850. Senior Jayne Finst (Delray Beach, FL) and sophomore Amber Smith (Fort Myers, FL) also competed in the all-around, finishing fifth (37.300) and sixth (36.600), respectively.
Finst was Brown's top finisher on the vault with a 9.550, while Verge took 12th in the event, scoring a 9.350. Verge placed second on the bars with a 9.700, while sophomore Sarah Cavett (Hixson, TN) placed fifth on the bars with a 9.575.
Verge also fared well on the beam, scoring a 9.725, which earned her a fourth place finish. Finst and junior Melissa Forziat (Garden City, NY) placed eighth (9.600) and ninth (9.575), respectively, on the beam.
In the final event, the floor exercise, the Bears had a 7-8-9 finish, with Finst taking seventh with a 9.750. Smith grabbed eighth with a 9.725, while senior Suzanne Schlosser (Tucson, AZ) finished in ninth with a 9.675.
The Bears continue action on Sunday, January 18th in a 1:00 p.m. meet at Southern Connecticut.
