McAvoy, Ryan Selected to Serve Gymnastics as Captains in 2017-18

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University gymnastics rising seniors Maggie McAvoy and Claire Ryan will both serve the Bears as captains during the 2017-18 academic year, Brown head coach Sara Carver-Milne announced on Tuesday.

A native of Charlotte, N.C., McAvoy has earned both All-ECAC and All-Ivy Classic honors on bars over the course of her career. Last season, she competed in 13 meets, focusing on bars and floor. McAvoy holds career highs of 9.750 on bars and 9.750 on floor and earned the program's Most Consistent award in 2016.

Ryan, a native of Greenwood, Minn., gained All-ECAC accolades on bars as a junior and has garnered the team's Unsung Hero award and Rookie of the Year award during her career. Last year, she competed in 12 meets, focusing on bars and beam. Ryan enters the 2018 season with career highs of 9.800 on bars, 9.600 on beam, and 9.850 on floor.

Last winter, the duo helped the Bears place third at the ECAC Championship and make their fifth straight team appearance at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships.
