Gymnastics Honors Class of 2017, Award Winners at Team Banquet

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University gymnastics celebrated its 2017 season and honored the members of its Class of 2017 and its award winners at the program's annual year-end banquet at the Faculty Club.

Senior Caroline Morant (Chicago, Ill.), the 2017 ECAC Gymnast of the Year, earned the Bears' Most Valuable Gymnast award for the second straight year while fellow senior Jorden Mitchell (Indianapolis, Ind.) won the program's Leadership Award.

Sophomore Julia Green (Exton, Pa.) gained the program's Most Improved award following a breakout season after missing her freshman year due to injury while Junior Anya Olson (Farmington Hills, Mich.) captured the Most Consistent award after placing second on bars at USAGs.

Sophomore Gabrielle Hechtman (Bellmore, N.Y.) took home the Bruno Award, junior Claire Ryan (Greenwood, Minn.) earned Brown's Unsung Hero award, and freshman Anne Christman (Amherst, N.H.) garnered the Bears' Rookie of the Year award.

Brown's seniors – Tori Kinamon (Peachtree City, Ga.), Jorden Mitchell (Indianapolis, Ind.), Caroline Morant (Chicago, Ill.), Brooke Williams (Clyde Hill, Wash.), and manager Renee Edelman (Maple Grove, Minn.) – all earned their white letter sweaters, the traditional gift bestowed upon Brown's seniors.

The Bears' freshmen – Anne Christman (Amherst, N.H.), Erin Howell (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.), Diana Manzano (New Braunfels, Texas), Ally Rudd (Olympia, Wash.), and Emma Shapland (Los Angeles, Calif.) – all gained their brown letter sweaters, the traditional gift imparted upon Brown's first-years.

Most Valuable Gymnast: Caroline Morant

  • Earned ECAC Co-Gymnast of the Year honors
  • Qualified for the NCAA Regionals as an all-around performer
  • Won the floor title at the ECAC Championship (Mar. 18)
  • Claimed the vault, bars, and floor titles at the Ivy Classic (Feb. 25)

Most Improved: Julia Green

  • Gained Second Team USAG All-America honors on vault
  • Earned All-ECAC on vault
  • Scored season highs of 9.725 on vault (four times), 9.750 on beam (Mar. 7), and 9.775 on floor (Mar. 11)

Most Consistent: Anya Olson

  • Captured USAG All-America honors on bars after placing second on bars in the Individual Event Finals (Apr. 9)
  • Garnered All-ECAC on bars and floor … Earned All-Ivy Classic on bars and floor
  • Scored season highs of 9.600 on vault (Feb. 19), 9.850 on bars (Apr. 9), 9.600 on beam (Feb. 4), 9.800 on floor (Mar. 18), and 38.550 in the all-around

Bruno Award: Gabrielle Hechtman

  • The Bruno Award is given to the gymnast who displays the best sportsmanship, team spirit, and positive motivation throughout the season
  • Did not compete in 2017 due to injury but earned Earned ECAC All-Academic Team honors
  • Won the team's Rookie of the Year award in 2016

Unsung Hero: Claire Ryan

  • Earned All-ECAC honors on bars
  • Scored season highs of 9.800 on bars (Mar. 18), 9.675 on beam (two times), and 9.625 on floor (Jan. 27)
  • Tallied a 9.600 or higher on bars in 11 of 12 meets

Rookie of the Year: Anne Christman

  • Earned All-Ivy Classic on beam
  • Scored season highs of 9.675 on vault (two times), 9.750 on beam (Jan. 14), and 9.775 on floor (two times)
  • Tallied a 9.600 or higher on floor nine times

Leadership Award: Jorden Mitchell

  • Garnered USAG All-America honors on vault, beam, and in the all-around
  • Earned All-ECAC on bars, beam, and in the all-around
  • Gained All-Ivy Classic on vault and beam
