Mitchell Wins All-Around, Gymnastics Claims Share of Team Title at Ivy Classic

ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior Jorden Mitchell won the all-around for the second straight year, and Brown University gymnastics claimed a share of the team title at the 2016 Ivy Classic at Cornell University's Bartels Hall on Sunday.

In the first-ever tie for the team title, Brown and Cornell each scored a 193.325. Yale came in third with a 191.650, and Penn finished fourth with a 191.050. The Bears have now captured the title in three of the last four years after taking first place in 2013 and 2014.

Mitchell (Indianapolis, Ind.) secured her second consecutive Ivy Classic All-Around crown with a score of 38.550. Mitchell has won the all-around in five of the Bears' seven meets this season. With her victory, a Brown gymnast has won the Ivy Classic all-around title in each of the last four years. Mitchell also won the floor title behind a score of 9.775, her second floor crown this season.

Junior Caroline Morant (Chicago, Ill.) supported Mitchell in the all-around with a score of 38.275, placing fourth.

In a back-and-forth affair in the team standings, Brown led Cornell after the first rotation 48.550-48.100. The Big Red then took a 96.775-96.575 lead after two rotations and a 145.200-144.975 edge through three before the Bears rallied to draw even in the final score.

On the day, nine Brown gymnasts collected a total of 19 All-Ivy Classic honors, including Mitchell's two titles. Mitchell took first team on floor and on vault while Morant collected first team on beam and second team on vault. Morant has now earned All-Ivy Classic honors in all four events over her career.

Senior Corey Holman (Westford, Mass.) captured first team on vault and second team on beam, gaining All-Ivy Classic accolades on beam for the fourth straight year. Senior Diana Walters (Austin, Texas) garnered first team on bars – her third All-Ivy Classic honors on bars – and classmate Alexandra Chretien (Commerce Township, Mich.) made first team on bars – her fourth straight All-Ivy Classic recognition on bars.

Sophomore Regan Butchness (Barrington, Ill.) and freshman Gabrielle Hechtman took second team plaudits on beam and first team laurels on floor respectively.

As a team, Brown scored 48.025 on vault, 48.400 on bars, 48.350 on beam, and a season-high 48.550 on floor.

On vault, Holman tied for second with a 9.725 while Mitchell came in fourth with a 9.700, and Morant placed fifth with a 9.550. Hechtman followed with a 9.550, and junior Brooke Williams (Clyde Hill, Wash.) posted a 9.375.

Walters paced the team with a 9.825 on bars for third place with Chretien supporting her with a 9.800 to tie for fifth. Sophomore Maggie McAvoy (Charlotte, N.C.) recorded a season-high 9.725 for second team All-Ivy Classic, and classmate Claire Ryan (Greenwood, Minn.) also tallied a season-best with a 9.650. Mitchell notched a 9.400.

On beam, Morant tied for second with a 9.775 while Holman and Butchness drew level in fifth with a 9.700 each. Mitchell and Ryan scored a 9.675 and a 9.500 respectively.

Mitchell led Brown on floor, winning the title with her 9.775. Hechtman placed in a tie for fourth behind a season-high 9.725. Williams scored a 9.700 for second team All-Ivy Classic, and Walters and Morant each charted a 9.675, a season high for Walters.

Next, Brown makes a trip to the West Coast as the Bears will compete at Sacramento State on Friday, March 4 at 10 p.m. ET and will perform at San Jose State with UC Davis on Sunday, March 6 at 5 p.m. ET.
