NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Jorden Mitchell won her fourth all-around title of the year, senior Corey Holman tied for the vault title, and Brown University gymnastics placed second with a 192.750 in a quad meet at Southern Connecticut State University's Moore Field House on Sunday afternoon.
The Bears defeated both third-place Yale University (191.300) and the host Owls (189.075) while falling to the six-time USAG Collegiate Nationals champions University of Bridgeport (194.125).
Engaging a trio of New England rivals, Brown improved to 4-0 vs. SCSU on the year and beat Yale – a team it will see at next weekend's Ivy Classic – in the first meeting between the two sides in 2016. The Bears moved to 1-3 against the Purple Knights on the season.
Mitchell (Indianapolis, Ind.) claimed the all-around crown for the fourth time in six meets this year behind a score of 38.700. Junior Caroline Morant (Chicago, Ill.) supported her with a 38.150 for fourth place, and senior Diana Walters (Austin, Texas) posted a 37.175 in her first all-around performance of the year.
As a team, Brown tallied a 48.225 on vault, a 48.375 on bars, a 47.675 on beam, and a 48.475 on floor.
On vault, Holman (Westford, Mass.) tied for first with a 9.750, tying her season high. Mitchell came in third in the event with a 9.700, and Morant placed fifth with a 9.675. Walters scored a 9.575, and freshman Gabrielle Hechtman (Bellmore, N.Y.) notched a 9.525.
Walters led the Bears on bars with a 9.800 for second place. Senior Alexandra Chretien (Commerce Township, Mich.) followed her with a 9.775 to tie for third. Sophomore Maggie McAvoy (Charlotte, N.C.) tallied a 9.625, classmate Claire Ryan (Greenwood, Minn.) recorded a season-high 9.600, and Mitchell logged a 9.575.
Mitchell paced Brown on beam, finishing in fifth place with a 9.700. Sophomore Regan Butchness (Barrington, Ill.), Holman, and Morant scored a 9.650, 9.600, and 9.475 respectively.
On floor, Morant notched a 9.775 for third, and Mitchell scored a 9.725 for fifth. Chretien registered a personal-best 9.675 while Hechtman and junior Brooke Williams (Clyde Hill, Wash.) each scored a 9.650. Walters added a season-high 9.550.
Next, Brown competes at the Ivy Classic at Cornell along with Penn and Yale on Sunday, Feb 28 at 1 p.m.
