SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior Jorden Mitchell won the all-around and balance beam titles as Brown University gymnastics won its third straight quad meet with a season-high 192.575 on Sunday afternoon at Springfield College's Blake Arena.
In the team standings, the Bears topped the Southern Connecticut State University Owls (189.025), the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons (187.275), and the host Pride (186.850) to capture their third straight meet to open the year.
Mitchell (Indianapolis, Ind.) claimed her third straight all-around crown with a 38.550 and tied for first on beam with a career-high 9.800. Junior Caroline Morant (Chicago, Ill.) won the uneven bars with a score of 9.800 and came in second in the all-around standings with a 38.300. Senior Corey Holman (Westford, Mass.) took the vault title with a season-high 9.750.
As a team, Brown scored a 47.900 on vault, a season-high 48.650 on bars, a season-best 48.150 on beam, and a 47.875 on floor.
Holman paced the Bears with her first-place, 9.750 finish on vault with Mitchell supporting her with a season-high 9.650 to tie for second. Senior Diana Walters (Austin, Texas), Morant, and freshman Gabrielle Hechtman (Bellmore, N.Y.) recorded a 9.525, 9.500 and 9.475 respectively.
The Bears gained the top six spots in the bars standings with Morant leading the way with her season-best 9.800. Junior Tori Kinamon (Peachtree City, Ga.) and Walters tied for second place with a 9.725 – a season high for Kinamon. Sophomore Maggie McAvoy (Charlotte, N.C.) and senior Alexandra Chretien (Commerce Township, Mich.) drew level in fourth place behind a 9.700 – a season best for McAvoy – while Mitchell came in sixth with a 9.600.
On beam, Brown earned three of the top four slots with Mitchell taking the lead with her personal-best 9.800 to tie for first. Holman placed in a tie for third with a 9.775, tying a career high. Sophomore Regan Butchness (Barrington, Ill.) finished in fourth with a 9.750, tying a season high, and freshman Cassidy Jung (San Marino, Calif.) posted a personal-best 9.575.
Morant led the Bears with a 9.750 on floor to place third. Chretien notched a personal-best 9.575, Hechtman tallied a 9.550, and sophomore Anya Barca-Hall (Santa Cruz, Calif.) and Mitchell each charted a 9.500.
Next, Brown competes in a quad meet at the University of New Hampshire with Towson University and the University of Bridgeport on Sunday, Feb 7 at 1 p.m.
