Gymnastics Tops Bridgeport, RIC, SCSU in Home-Opening Quad Meet

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Jorden Mitchell, senior Diana Walters, and sophomore Regan Butchness all gained titles for the second straight week as Brown University gymnastics won for the second time in as many meets on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

In their home opener, the Bears scored a 191.175 to out-distance the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights (190.850), the Southern Connecticut State University Owls (186.625), and the Rhode Island College Achorwomen (176.700). Last week Brown beat SCSU, Ithaca, and Springfield with a 188.950 in its season debut.

Mitchell (Indianapolis, Ind.) claimed the all-around title for the second straight meet, tallying a 37.875. Walters (Austin, Texas) tied for first place on bars alongside senior Alexandra Chretien (Commerce Township, Mich.) with each scoring a 9.750. Butchness (Barrington, Ill.) secured the beam title behind a score of 9.750.

As a team, Brown led through each rotation, opening with a 47.825 on vault, posting a 47.850 on bars, notching a 47.575 on beam, and finishing with a 47.925 on floor.

In a balanced effort on vault, Mitchell paced the Bears with a 9.625. Juniors Caroline Morant (Chicago, Ill.) and Brooke Williams (Clyde Hill, Wash.) followed her with each registering a 9.575. Freshman Morgan Hagenbuch (Norwich, N.Y.) and senior Corey Holman (Westford, Mass.) each tallied a 9.525.

Brown landed four of the top five performers on bars with Walters and Chretien topping all competitors with the 9.750. Mitchell and sophomore Maggie McAvoy (Charlotte, N.C.) tied for fourth with a 9.600 apiece.

On beam, the Bears again finished with four student-athletes posting top-five performances as Butchness paced the team with her 9.750, first-place finish. Morant came in second with a 9.600 while freshman Cassidy Jung (San Marino, Calif.) and sophomore Claire Ryan (Greenwood, Minn.) drew level in fourth with a 9.550 each.

Concluding on floor, Mitchell came in third with a 9.750 while Hechtman supported her with a 9.700. McAvoy notched a career high with a 9.525, sophomore Anya Barca-Hall (Santa Cruz, Calif.) compiled a 9.550, and Chretien charted a 9.400.

Next, Brown competes in a quad meet at Springfield College with SUNY Cortland and Southern Connecticut on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 1 p.m.
