NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Jorden Mitchell won the all-around, and three different Bears claimed event titles as Brown University gymnastics won its season-opening quad meet at Southern Connecticut State University, scoring a 188.950 on Saturday afternoon at Moore Field House.
"It was a challenging day for the Bears with some of our key gymnasts not competing," Brown head coach Sara Carver-Milne said. "The Bears pulled together as a team, and stepped up to fill the lineups and gain experience."
Mitchell (Indianapolis, Ind.) took the all-around with a score of 37.150 while senior Diana Walters (Austin, Texas) took first place on bars, sophomore Regan Butchness (Barrington, Ill.) gained gold on beam, and junior Brooke Williams (Clyde Hill, Wash.) tied for first on floor.
"Freshman Gabby Hechtman came through in a big way on three events," Carver-Milne said. "Junior Tori Kinamon and senior Stephanie Choo returned to competition with great routines on bars, after missing last season. We're eager to return to the gym to prepare for our home opener next Sunday."
In the team standings, Brown edged the host SCSU Owls (187.750) and topped the Ithaca College Bombers (185.925) and the Springfield College Pride (185.275).
As a team, the Bears tallied a 47.925 on vault, a 47.550 on bars, a 45.900 on beam, and a 47.575 on floor.
On vault, senior Corey Holman (Westford, Mass.) paced the Bears with a 9.650 to tie for second place. Freshman Gabrielle Hechtman (Bellmore, N.Y.) and Mitchell each scored a 9.625 while freshman Morgan Hagenbuch (Norwich, N.Y.) and Williams posted a 9.550 and 9.475 respectively.
Walters led the team on bars with a 9.625 for first with junior Tori Kinamon (Peachtree City, Ga.) supporting her with a 9.575 and tying for second place in the event. Behind the duo, Mitchell, sophomore Maggie McAvoy (Charlotte, N.C.), and senior Alexandra Chretien (Commerce Township, Mich.) registered a 9.525, 9.450, and 9.375 in order.
Butchness placed first on beam behind a score of 9.675, freshman Cassidy Jung (San Marino, Calif.) recorded a 9.475, and Hechtman finished with a 9.275.
On floor, Williams tied for the event title with a score of 9.700 while Mitchell came in third with a 9.650. Hechtman placed fourth with a 9.575, and Chretien tied for fifth with a career-high 9.525.
Next, Brown opens up its home schedule with a tri-meet against Rhode Island College and the University of Bridgeport on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m. at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
