Morant Takes All-Around, Gymnastics Wins Home Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Caroline Morant won the all-around to help lead Brown University gymnastics to a first-place finish in its home opener at the team's first-ever Beauty & the Beast meet in conjunction with Brown wrestling at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday night.

The Bears scored a 192.375 to defeat the six-time defending USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Champions the University of Bridgeport (191.500), Rhode Island College (177.925), and the University of Rhode Island (170.650).

Brown, the back-to-back Ivy Classic champions and reigning ECAC champs, avenged a close loss from last week after falling to the Purple Knights, 192.000-191.075 at Southern Conn. St. on Jan. 17.

Alongside the gymnastics team, Brown wrestling also won, earning a 37-6 win over Sacred Heart before a capacity crowd at the Pizzitola.

Morant (Chicago, Ill.) took the all-around title with a score of 38.875, which included a first-place finish on beam (9.800) and a second-place finish on vault (9.700).

The Bears earned five of the top six spots on beam and five of the top seven spots on bars on their way to the victory.

On beam, Morant led the way in first with freshman and last week's ECAC Rookie of the Week Claire Ryan (Greenwood, Minn.) following in third place with a 9.675. Classmate Anya Olson (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and junior Diana Walters (Austin, Texas) tied for fourth with a 9.650 while freshman Regan Butchness (Barrington, Ill.) finished sixth with a 9.625.

Junior Alexandra Chretien (Commerce Township, Mich.) won the uneven parallel bars event with a score of 9.775 while Morant supported her in third place with a 9.675. Sophomore Jorden Mitchell (Indianapolis, Ind.) tied for fourth with a 9.650, Olson came in sixth (9.625), and Ryan finished seventh (9.600).

Morant posted the Bears' top score on vault, ahead of senior Danielle Hoffman (Bedford, N.Y.) who came in fifth with a 9.600, Mitchell (sixth, 9.525), and sophomore Brooke Williams (Clyde Hill, Wash.) who finished seventh (9.500).

On the team's final rotation, Olson, Ryan, and Morant each scored a team-high on floor exercise with scores of 9.700, tying for fourth place. Walters came in seventh with a 9.650.

Next, Brown competes at Rutgers along with Michigan State and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Jan. 31 at 4 p.m.
