Walters Wins All-Around, Gymnastics Comes in Second in Season Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Diana Walters won the all-around title to lead Brown University gymnastics to a second-place finish in its season-opening meet at Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon at Moore Field House.

Brown finished the meet with a team score of 191.075, defeating the host Owls (189.850) and Rhode Island College (175.375).

The Bears, the back-to-back Ivy Classic champions and reigning ECAC champions, fell only to six-time defending USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Champions the University of Bridgeport (192.000). After two rotations, the Bears led the Purple Knights, 95.550-95.350.

Walters (Austin, Texas) won the all-around with a score of 38.725. She also won the all-around at the USAG National Championships in her last collegiate competition of the 2014 season. Sophomore Caroline Morant (Chicago, Ill.) took third place in the all-around with a 37.325.

Walters paced the team finishing second on vault with a 9.625 while three Bears finished in the top-10 of the event. Sophomore Jorden Mitchell (Indianapolis, Ind.) came in sixth with a 9.525, Morant finished in a tie for seventh (9.475), and fellow sophomore Brooke Williams (Clyde Hill, Wash.) recorded a 10th-place finish (9.425).

On the bars, Morant notched a team-best score of 9.825, earning second place while Walters tallied a 9.775 for third. Freshman Claire Ryan (Greenwood, Minn.) came in seventh with a 9.675 in her first collegiate meet, and sophomore Tori Kinamon (Peachtree City, Ga.) earned 11th place with a score of 9.575.

Walters again tallied a team high on beam taking fourth place with a 9.725, just ahead of freshman Anya Olson (Farmington Hills, Mich.) who registered a score of 9.650 for sixth place. Ryan came in ninth with a 9.475 and junior Corey Holman (Westford, Mass.) followed in 10th with a 9.450.

On floor, senior captain Danielle Hoffman (Bedford, N.Y.) topped all Bear performers with a 9.700, garnering fifth place. Behind her, Morant came in seventh (9.650), ahead of Walters and Williams who tied for ninth (9.600).

Brown next competes in the Bears' first-ever Beauty & the Beast meet in conjunction with Brown wrestling on Jan. 24. The gymnastics team will square off with Bridgeport, Rhode Island College, and the University of Rhode Island beginning at 6 p.m.
