Gymnastics Boasts Nation’s Fifth-Best GPA, 12 Named Academic Scholar-Athletes

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the second time in three years, the Brown gymnastics team posted the nation's fifth-best grade point average, turning in a mark of 3.6306 on the strength of 12 Academic Scholar-Athletes as announced by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) on Monday.
The Bears finished only behind Utah, Texas Woman's, Southeast Missouri State and Western Michigan in team GPA rankings, while placing first among Ivy League programs that sponsor gymnastics. Brown matched its Academic Scholar-Athlete total of 12 from last year, with the following gymnasts earning recognition for maintaining a GPA of 3.50 or higher: senior Madeline Benz (Chester, N.J.), sophomore Stephanie Choo (Centerville, Ohio), sophomore Alexa Cohen (Henrico, Va.), freshman Renee Edelman (Maple Grove, Minn.), senior Rebecca Freedman (Plainview, N.Y.), junior Danielle Hoffman (Bedford, N.Y.), sophomore Corey Holman (Westford, Mass.), freshman Tori Kinamon (Peachtree City, Ga.), senior Katie Rogers (Bethesda, Md.), senior Michelle Shnayder (Lincolnshire, Ill.), sophomore Diana Walters (Austin, Texas) and freshman Brooke Williams (Clyde Hill, Wash.).
Brown adds to its lengthy list of academic accomplishments for the 2014 season, highlighted by Shnayder's selection to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I At-Large Team. Shnayder and fellow senior Freedman were honored as ECAC Co-Scholar Athletes of the Year, while Shnayder also received Academic All-Ivy accolades.
