Gymnastics Claims Second Straight Ivy Classic Title

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – An inspired 49.125 team score on the floor exercise shattered the Bears' program record and lifted the Brown gymnastics team to its second straight Ivy Classic Championship on the strength of a 193.375 team total at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Sunday. The Bears earned their highest team total since last year's Ivy Classic, snapped an 11-year-old record on floor and saw 11 different personal records set during the event.

In an air-tight race in the rest of the team standings, Yale (190.250) placed second, Penn (190.150) took third and Cornell (190.025) took fourth.

Sophomore Diana Walters (Austin, Texas) capped a stellar day with personal records in all four events en route to the All-Around Championship with a score of 39.00. Walters took a share of first place on vault (9.725) with freshman Caroline Morant (Chicago, Ill.) while placing second on bars (9.775), third on beam (9.700) and fifth (9.800) in an extremely competitive floor field. Senior Michelle Shnayder (Lincolnshire, Ill.) finished third on all-around (38.525) and Morant placed fourth (37.750).

Junior Danielle Hoffman (Beford, N.Y.) turned in a near-perfect 9.925 routine on floor to take first place, tying the program record set by four-time World Championships gold medalist Alicia Sacramone in 2007 and becoming the first Brown gymnast to break 9.9 since Sacramone established her mark seven years ago. Hoffman ignited the Bears in a record-setting team effort that saw Shnayder take second (9.875), Morant place fourth (9.825) and Walters finish fifth (9.800).

The Bears opened on bars and recorded a 48.500 to sit in second place and narrowly trail Cornell's 48.700 on floor. Brown secured second through fourth in the standings thanks to personal bests from Walters (9.775), sophomore Alexandra Chretien (Commerce Township, Mich.) (9.775) and freshman Tori Kinamon (Peachtree City, Ga.) (9.750).

Beam posed Brown's biggest challenge of the day with a 47.500 team score but it proved enough to launch the Bears into first place ahead of Yale's 95.25 overall mark. Walters placed third with a 9.700 for her second personal record of the day and sophomore Corey Holman (Westford, Mass.) took sixth with a 9.600. Hoffman set a personal record with a 9.550 and finished eighth.

Intent on bringing home back-to-back Ivy Classic titles, the Bears unleashed an indomitable performance on floor and seized four of the top 10 scores including Hoffman's monumental 9.925. A total of six personal records fell during the event: Hoffman (9.925), Shnayder (9.875), Morant (9.825), Walters (9.800), freshman Jorden Mitchell (Indianapolis, Ind.) (9.700) and freshman Brooke Williams (Clyde Hill, Wash.) (9.700). The new school record of 49.125 gave Brown a team score of 145.125 through three rotations and a comfortable lead over second-place Cornell (142.95).

Rather than ease to the finish, the Bears hit a 48.250 on vault powered by twin 9.725 scores from Morant and Walters to secure the Ivy Classic crown. Shnayder clocked in at 9.675 for second place and senior Rebecca Freedman (Plainview, N.Y.) captured third with a 9.625.

Following a brief layoff, the Bears return to action at Bridgeport on Thursday, March 6. First rotation will begin at 6 p.m.
