BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA – The Brown gymnastics team concluded its trip to California with a three-team meet at Haas Pavilion on the campus of Cal Berkeley on Monday evening. The Cal Bears led the competition, turning in a team score of 195.925. San Jose State claimed the second spot with a total of 195.000, and the Brown Bears finished in third with 189.350. Junior Michelle Shnayder (Lincolnshire, IL) was Brown's only competitor in the all-around, finishing fourth with a score of 38.325.
Senior Nicole Abdo (Largo, FL) led Brown's team performance on the bars, scoring a 9.650 to take the ninth overall spot. She was followed by freshman Alexandra Chretien (Commerce Township, MI) who tied for tenth with a score of 9.625. Shnayder was 13th with a 9.475, while senior co-captain Lauren Hall (Charlton, MA) grabbed the 16th spot with an 8.925 performance. Freshman Stephanie Choo (Centerville, OH) and senior co-captain Kasey Haas (Charlotte, NC) rounded out the Brown performers in 17th and 18th, contributing scores of 8.050 and 8.000 to the team's score of 45.725.
The Bears earned their highest team score of the day on vault, combining for a 48.175. Senior Emily Lutfey (Los Angeles, CA) led the charge with a 9.675, good for 11th place. Brown also grabbed the next several spots, as sophomore Danielle Hoffman (Bedford, NY) and junior Rebecca Freedman (Plainview, NY) tied for 12th with a score of 9.650 and Shnayder, freshman Diana Walters (Austin, TX) and junior Katie Rogers (Bethesda, MD) all finished with a 9.600 to tie for 14th.
The squad combined for a total of 48.075 on the beam, with senior Julia Meyer (Granite City, IL) finishing in a tie for 10th after scoring a 9.700. Lutfey and freshman Corey Holman (Westford, MA) each earned a score of 9.625 to tie for 12th, while Abdo finished right behind them in 15th with a 9.600. Shnayder turned in a score of 9.525 to take 16th, while sophomore Allison Rubenstein (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ) finished in 18th with a 9.150.
On the floor, Shnayder turned in the top score for Brown, finishing in a tie for ninth with a 9.725. Lutfey took the 11th spot with a 9.675, while Holman turned in a score of 9.475 to grab the 13th spot. Abdo finished in 14th with a 9.375 and Hoffman earned a score of 9.125 to take 15th. Freedman also competed for the Bears on the floor, taking 17th with an 8.500. The Bears compiled a team score of 47.375 on the apparatus.
Brown will travel to New Haven, Connecticut this Saturday to compete in the Ivy Classic with Yale, Cornell and Penn. Competition is set to begin at 1:00pm.
