Providence, RI- The Brown gymnastics team defeated the visiting Cornell Big Red 189.300 to 187.200 in a dual meet on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Junior Julia Meyer (Granite City, IL) and sophomore Michelle Shnayder (Lincolnshire, IL) each won titles for the Bears this afternoon, as Meyer captured the bar title and Shnayder won both the floor and all-around competition.
Cornell picked up first and second place in the vault, but Brown had four individuals earn third through fourth place finishes. Shnayder was the Bears' top scorer with a 9.550 for third, while freshman Danielle Hoffman (Bedford, NY), junior Emily Lutfey (Los Angeles, CA) and sophomore Katie Rogers (Bethesda, MD) all tied for fourth with a 9.425. Senior Katie Goddard (Kings Park, NY) followed in eighth with a 9.400 and freshman Allison Rubenstein (Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ) came in right behind with a 9.325 for ninth to help the Bears to a score of 47.225 (2nd).
The Bears locked up first through second place finishes on the uneven bars, as Meyer won the title with a 9.625. Junior Nicole Abdo (Largo, FL) earned second with a 9.575 and junior Kasey Haas (Charlotte, NC) was next for the Bears with a 9.400 for fifth. Shnayder and senior Lilly Siems (Baltimore, MD) tied for ninth with a 9.100 and rounding out the scorers was junior Lauren Hall (Charlton, MA) with an 8.650. The Bears tallied a 46.800 (2nd).
Lutfey led Brown on the balance beam with a third place score of 9.525, and was followed by Rubenstein's 9.475 (4th) and Abdo's 9.425 (5th). Next, Hoffman posted a 9.375 to place seventh and Shnayder recorded a 9.150 for eighth. Meyer scored an 8.625 to give the Bears a 46.950 (1st).
The Bears dominated on the floor, securing first through fifth place finishes. Shnayder won the title with a 9.750, followed by Lutfey's second place score of 9.725. Goddard followed with a 9.650 for third and Hoffman posted a 9.625 for fourth. Rubenstein earned fifth place with a 9.575, and Abdo rounded out the Bears' competitors with a 9.225 for eighth. The Bears tallied a team score of 48.325 to win the event.
Shnayder won the all-around with a total score of 37.550.
The Bears are back in action vs. Southern Connecticut on Saturday, March 17, at 1 p.m. in their final home meet of the 2012 season. Brown will honor its three seniors (Katie Goddard, Lilly Siems and Carli Wiesenfeld) prior to the meet
