Gymnastics Falls Short at Arizona State

Tempe, AZ- The Brown University Bears traveled our west to take on the talented Arizona State women's gymnastics team on Friday evening. The Gym Devils were able to combine for a 191.325 to earn its first win of the season, as the Bears came up short with a 186.875. Sophomore Emily Lutfey highlighted the afternoon by earning the all-around title with a total of 37.625.

The Bears posted some strong results on the vault and totaled a score of 47.225. Both Katie Goddard and Emily Lutfey earned fourth place finishes and led the Bears with a 9.500, while Rebecca Freedman and Michelle Shnayder earned scores of a 9.475 and 9.425 to finish in seventh and eighth place, respectively. Rounding out Brown's scoring was Carli Wiesenfeld with a 9.325 and Chelsey Binkley with a 9.150.

Lutfey was again Brown's top scorer on bars earning a 9.525 for fourth place, and Kasey Haas recorded a personal record of a 9.5 for sixth place as the Bears tallied a total score of 48.275. Lauren Hall followed right behind with a 9.425 and Julia Meyer posted a 9.000. Also competing was Wiesenfeld (8.875) and Binkley (8.400).

The Bears seemed to have some trouble on the beam, but Wiesenfeld had a big performance for Brown scoring a 9.625 for second place, while Haas had another personal record with a 9.275 for fourth place. In sixth was Victoria Zanelli with a 9.025, while Michelle Shnayder and Emily Lutfey earned scores of 8.850 and 8.825 to finish in eighth and ninth place.

Lutfey had a great performance on the floor exercise finishing with a 9.775 for third place, as Brown's Katie Goddard posted a 9.575 for seventh. Shnayder hit a personal record 9.550 for eighth place, and Wiesenfeld had a 9.425 for 10th. Sophomore Nicole Abdo had a solid showing to earn a 9.400 and Haas had a 9.375 for 12th place.

Lutfey cleaned up the all-around with a first place total of 37.625, followed by Wiesenfeld with a 37.250 and Arizona's Beate Jones with a 37.175.

The Bears are back in action next weekend on Feb. 4 when it heads back to Rutgers to take on the Scarlet Knights and Bridgeport for a 7 p.m. meet.
