Providence, RI- The Brown University gymnastics team will begin the 2011 season at 1 p.m. tomorrow when it hosts University of Bridgeport and Towson at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Live video of the Brown events will be available for a fee on brownbears.com.
Under the direction of head coach Sara Carver-Milne, the Bears will be led this season by senior captains Chelsley Binkley and Victoria Zanelli. As a junior, Binkley received her team's Most Valuable Gymnast Award, was a USAG All-American on the vault and earned second team All-ECAC honors on the vault after a career-high performance of a 9.750. Zanelli, Brown's Most Valuable Gymnast as a sophomore, earned All-American status on beam. As a junior, however, she competed on the beam for the Bears after sustaining an injury and posted solid scores throughout the season, included a career-high 9.775 during the Ivy Classic.
Bridgeport is coming off its second straight national championship and also won the ECAC Division II Team Title and earned 15 All-American honors in individual events at the 2010 USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships.
Towson have eight letter winners returning from last year's team which posted a 20-4 overall record and won the ECAC Championship for the sixth straight year. Under the guidance of first-year head coach Vicki Chliszczyk, the Tigers will be led by the team's only seniors Megan Wooden and Emily Hill. Wooden earned All-ECAC honors in vault, bars, floor exercise and all-around. Hill, competed almost exclusively on bars during her career, earned All-ECAC honors as a junior.
The Brown gymnasts will be giving out team posters to fans and will be signing autographs after the meet.
