Bears Earn Second Place With Season High 188.550; Katie Goddard Takes First on Floor

Providence, RI- The Brown University gymnastics team earned second place with a season-high score of 188.550 in a quad-meet this evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.  Bridgeport edged the Bears with a total of 190.225, as the Bears followed in second, followed by the University of Pennsylvania with a 183.975 and the URI Club team earned a 168.650.  This is the fifth consecutive week that the Bears have improved on its total, and the Bears also earned a season-high score on the vault this afternoon as well.

On the vault, Bridgeport's Lorraine Gallow (9.775) and Monica Mesalles (9.725) locked up first and second place finishes, but Brown's Carli Wiesenfeld posted a personal best 9.650 to earn third place.  Both Katie Goddard and Emily Lutfey tied for sixth place with a 9.575, a personal best for Goddard, and Lauren Hall picked up 11th place honors with a 9.550.   Junior Chelsey Binkley and freshman Nicole Abdo earned 15th place honors with a 9.425.   Bridgeport won the event with an overall score of 48.275, but Brown's 47.775 was a season high to finish second on the vault.  Penn finished third with a 47.325 overall as URI Club combined for a 45.100.

Carissa Huggins of Bridgeport earned the top spot on the uneven parallel bars with a 9.750, but Brown's Julia Meyer was close behind with a personal best score of 9.700 for second place.  Binkley recorded a 9.400 for eighth place, followed by Hall with a 9.350 for 10th and senior Izzy Kirkham-Lewitt earned 13th with a 9.150.  Bruno tallied a 46.500 on the event coming in third overall, as Bridgeport recorded a 47.500 and Penn earned a 46.950.

Bridgeport's Emily Repko earned the beam title with a 9.625, while Brown's Meyer earned second place with a solid 9.575.  Brown's Lutfey followed with a fifth place score of a 9.500, as Abdo posted a 9.450 for seventh and Kirkham-Lewitt earned 11th with a score of 9.300.  Binkley rounded out Brown's top marks with a 9.050 for 13th place.  Bridgeport earned a 47.650 to finish first overall on the event, while Brown followed closely with a 46.875. Penn combined for a 44.200 overall and URI Club put together a 42.225.

Goddard won the floor exercise with a stellar score of 9.625, followed by Bridgeport's Mesalles with a 9.575 for second.  Lutfey earned third place with a 9.550, while both Abdo and Binkley shared fifth place with a score of a 9.475.  Wiesenfeld registered a 9.275 for ninth, and Lauren Hall earned 13th with a 9.050. The Bears once again did an outstanding job on the floor to win the event with a 47.400, defeating Bridgeport's 46.800 and Penn's 45.500.

Lorraine Galow of Bridgeport won the all-around title with a score of 38.075, but Brown's Binkley earned second with a 37.350 and Lutfey finished third with a 37.325. Also, Hall earned a personal best all-around score of 36.875 for fifth place. 

The Bears will hit the road to compete against Alaska Anchorage at 7:00 p.m. on Feb. 19 and 2:00 p.m. on Feb. 21st.  Then, the Bears will vie for the Ivy Classic title when it hosts Penn, Cornell and Yale at 1:00 p.m. on Feb. 28th
