Gymnastics Defeats SCSU and MIT Club in First Home Meet of 2010 Season

Providence, RI- The Brown University gymnastics defeated both Southern Connecticut and MIT’s Club gymnastics team, but fell to the University of New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.  The Wildcats tallied a 193.850 for first place, while Brown recorded a 186.400, the highest team total of any Ivy League team this weekend, as SCSU (184.925) and MIT (153.700) followed behind.

Brown's Carli Wiesenfeld led the squad on the vault with a 9.275 for 10th place, as the team finished third overall on the event with a total of 45.925.  Chesley Binkley followed with a 9.250 for 11th place, as both Helen Segal and Emily Lutfey finished in 13th place with a 9.175.   New Hampshire won the event with a 46.550, and locked up first through fourth place finishes, while SCSU turned in a 46.550.

Freshman Julia Meyer led the Bears on the uneven bars with a season high 9.525 for seventh place, as rookie Lauren Hall followed with a 9.350 for 12th and Wiesenfeld came in 13th with a 9.325.  Chelsey Binkley also finished with a solid 9.2 and came in 15th place.   Overall, the Bears combined for a 46.250, which placed behind UNH (48.525) and Southern Connecticut (46.900). 

Helen Segal earned Bruno's top spot on the balance beam with a personal high of 9.375 for seventh place, while freshman Nicole Abdo followed in eighth with a 9.325 and Emily Lutfey earned a 9.275 for ninth.   The Bears tallied an overall score of 46.025 to finish in second on the event behind UNH (48.325), as SCSU placed third with a 44.575.

Segal had a huge performance for Brown on the floor exercise, garnering fourth place with a stellar 9.750.  Binkley followed right behind with a 9.725 for fifth place, as Nicole Abdo and Katie Goddard each earned ninth place with a 9.650.  Also turning in solid scores on the event was Lutfey (9.425) in 13th, and Lauren Hall (9.275) in 16th.  Brown combined for a 48.200 to finish just behind UNH (48.900), but defeated both SCSU (46.900) and MIT (39.450).

New Hampshire's Chelsey Steinberg won the all-around competition with a 38.975, but Brown's Binkley followed just behind with a 37.025 for second.  Rebecca Brady of SCSU came in third (36.825) and Brown's Emily Lutfey finished fourth overall with a 36.700. 

Brown is back in action next Sunday (Jan. 31) when it hosts Bridgeport and Rhode Island College at 1:00 p.m. at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
