Rosemont, IL - Brown Head Fencing Coach Atilio Tass took a big step towards qualifying for the US National Fencing Team this weekend, winning the men's sabre competition for the Veteran 50-59 age group at the North American Cup event held in Rosemont, Ill. The event was the second of three for the Veteran division in the 2007-08 season.
With a top three finish at the Summer National Championships, held in San Jose, Calif., this July, Tass will qualify for the Veteran 50-59 National Team. In determining who makes the team, a fencer's top two finishes in the three events are considered. At the first NAC competition for the Veteran division, held Dec. 7-9 in Alexandria, Va., Tass finished 13th.
Before worrying about Summer Nationals, however, Tass will be concentrating on leading his three qualifiers - sophomores Randy Alevi (Old Westbury, NY) in women's sabre, Adam Pantel (Mendham, NJ) in men's foil, and Adam Yarnell (Harrison, NY) in men's epée - at this weekend's NCAA Championships at Ohio State. Alevi will fence at the round-robin competition on Thursday and Friday, with the two Adams competing on Saturday and Sunday.
