The Brown University Fencing Team came out strong at its first league meet of the season, held Saturday, November 15 at the University of New Hampshire. Both the men's and women's squads secured victories against the New Hampshire, Boston University and the University of Massachusetts, while losing close and hard fought matches to regional rival MIT. The Brown women also squared off against their perennial nemesis, Wellesley College.
All-American Ruth Schneider (Rochester, NY) put in another stellar performance for Brown, going undefeated on the day. Against New Hampshire, the Bears first opponent of the day, Schneider anchored the women's epee squad to a 9-0 sweep. Tri-captain Alessandra Assante (New York, NY), sophomore Lucy Walker (Houston, TX), Shauna Edson (Livermore, CA), and Heather Johnston (Upland, CA) all contributed victories in the shut-out. The women's sabre squad went 6-3 and Brown's women foilist finished 4-5, giving the Bears a solid 19-8 victory.
The men's sabre team was denied the sweep but came away with a 8-1 victory and the men's epee earned a 5-4 win against New Hampshire. The men's foil lost a close contest 4-5, but the Brown men still came away with a 17-10 win.
Brown's top sabreman, NCAA Alternate Dan Dorsky (Springfield, NJ) paced his squad to a 9-0 sweep of Boston University. Jeremy Adler (Larchmont, NY), Dan Mahoney (Haydenville, MA) and Ven Tadipatri (Sheldon, CT) all defeated their opponents in head-to-head matches.
Freshman Jennifer Hausmann (Mill Valley, CA) led the women's foil squad to a 8-1 thrashing of Boston University, while the women's epee squad also took their match 8-1. Tri-captain Brian Williams (Concord, MA) and the Brown men's epee squad defeated Boston University 7-2. The Brown men and women squads both ended their matches in a 19-8 defeat over the Terriers.
The Brown women's sabre squad came out charging against the tough Wellesley College team. Christina Rodriquez-Hart (Los Angeles, CA) lead the squad to a 6-3 victory. Sophomores Juliane Kellner (Dusseldorf, Germany), Nanette Milner (Chicago, ILL.) and Claire Coiro (Princeton, NJ) helped push the women's foil squad to a 5-4 victory. The women's epee dropped its match 4-5, but the Bears still came away with a 15-12 win.
All of Brown's squads posted victories over the Univerisity of Massachusetts. The women's epee finished 6-3, women's foil went 6-3 and women's sabre won 5-4 to give Brown the win. On the men's side, the sabre squad put up a 7-2 performance, the epee squad took its match 5-4 and the men's foil also finished 5-4 behind a strong showing from nationally ranked freshman Jeremy Zeitlin (Piedmont, CA).
Brown ended the day behind their toughest competition, MIT. Despite a hard fought battle, the women's team fell 10-17, and the men lost 12-15. However, Brown's women epee came away with a 5-4 victory in its meeting with the Engineers, while the men's sabre team won its match with a final score of 6-3.
The Brown fencing team returns to action on November 23 when they meet Vassar, regional rivals Boston College and Brandeis, the National Champion St. Johns University and re-match MIT.
