Waltham, MA - The fencing squads competed at the IFA Championships over the weekend, as head coach Atilio Tass made the decision to rest a number of his regulars in preparation for the upcoming postseason. Competing largely with backups, the women took 10th on the day, while the men finished 12th in the team standings.
Sophomore Joseph Isaacson (Latham, N.Y.) was the top finisher for the men in the saber, picking up a 9th place finish after finishing eighth in the qualifying rounds. Senior Nick Bender (New York, N.Y.), meanwhile, led the way for the Bears in the foil, finishing tenth in the qualifying action. Bender did not place in the final standings however. Rookie Andrew Pintea (New York, N.Y.) had a solid outing in his first extended action of the season, picking up a ninth-place finish in the qualifiers. Pintea also failed to place in the finals though.
On the women's side, senior Deborah Gorth (Amherst, MA) turned in the top finish of the day for Brown, earning a fifth place finish. Classmate Charlotte Rose (Bethesda, MD) also fought well, coming in 15th overall. The foil and epee were sources of trouble for Bruno, however, as no athletes placed, and none finished higher than 10th in qualifying action. Largely on the strength of the saber, the Brown women placed 10th out of 12 teams in the competition.
The Bears will be back in action on Sunday, March 8, when they travel to MIT to compete in Regionals.
