Women Lead Fencing with 5-2 Record at First Conference Meet

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Brown University women's fencing posted a 5-2 record while the men went 3-2 for a combined 8-4 mark at Northeast Fencing Conference Meet No. 1 at MIT's Johnson Gymnasium on Saturday.

The women's side defeated Boston University (9-8), Smith (22-5), New Hampshire (27-0), Wellesley (15-12), and Massachusetts (19-8) while falling to Sacred Heart (16-11) and Boston College (18-9).

The men's team picked up wins over Boston University (23-4), New Hampshire (25-2), and Massachusetts (23-4) while dropping decisions to Sacred Heart (16-11) and Boston College (18-9).

Women's epee went 6-1 on the day compiling a 40-23 overall record while men's sabre went 4-1 with a 29-15 composite mark, and women's foil went 5-2 with a 45-18 record. Men's epee finished the day 34-9, men's foil notched a 28-17 mark, and women's sabre went 36-27.

Junior Clarissa Allen (Newtown, Pa.) led Brown with a 20-1 record on the day in women's foil. Sophomore Ebba Brunnstrom (London, England) supported her with a 16-5 mark. Junior Signe Ferguson (Wilmington, Del.) paced the women's epee squad with an 18-3 record, and senior Mika Gross (Newton, Mass.) led the women's sabre squad with a 16-5 mark.

In men's foil, sophomore Umar Masood (Pittsford, N.Y.) led the way with a 12-3 mark while in men's sabre senior Alex Palabrica (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Alexander Catoya (Rutherford, N.J.) finished 12-3 and 11-4 respectively.

In men's epee, sophomore Julius Reiner (Chicago, Ill.) went 9-0 while senior James Yoon (Austin, Texas), junior Ryan Connor (Lincoln, R.I.), and junior Samuel Koch (San Francisco, Calif.) went 10-4, 8-2, and 7-3 respectively.

Next, Brown will compete at the Brandeis Invitational in Waltham, Mass., on Sunday, Dec. 4.
