Fencing Teams Combine for Two Golds, Two Silvers at The Big One

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Brown University fencing claimed two gold medals, two silver medals, and eight total top-10 finishes in its season opener at "The Big One" at the Smith College Indoor Tennis and Track Facility on Saturday.

Junior Samuel Koch (San Francisco, Calif.) took gold in men's epee, notching an 11-0 record on the day while sophomore Umar Masood (Pittsford, N.Y.) captured gold in men's foil behind a 12-0 mark on the day.

Junior Clarissa Allen (Newtown, Pa.) led the women's team with a silver medal in women's foil behind an 11-1 record, and senior Alex Palabrica (Los Angeles, Calif.) secured a silver medal in men's sabre with a 10-2 mark.

Junior Ryan Connor (Lincoln, R.I.) placed sixth in men's epee with an 8-1 record while senior James Yoon (Austin, Texas) followed him in the weapon with a 10th-place finish and a 7-1 mark.

Junior Alexander Catoya (Rutherford, N.J.) came in eighth place in men's sabre with a 9-2 record, and sophomore Ebba Brunnstrom (London, England) finished in 10th place in women's foil with an 8-1 record.

The men's epee squad paced the team with a 29-6 overall record, placing three fencers in the top 10. The women's foil squad led the women's side with a 24-4 overall mark, including a pair of top-10 finishers. The men's sabre squad went 23-13.

At the event formally known as the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference Fall Invitational, fencers competed in a pool round in order to advance into a 64-fencer, single-elimination bracket.

Next, Brown will compete at Northeast Fencing Conference Meet No. 1 at MIT in Cambridge, Mass., on Saturday, Nov. 19.
