BRUNO AT THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
In 2015, Brown qualified five fencers for the NCAA Championships and finished in a tie for 13th, matching the best team finish in program history, also set in 2011 and 2012.
Simon Jones '16 led the group with his 12th-place finish in men's epee. Alex Palabrica '17 (Los Angeles, Calif.) came in 16th in men's sabre, Christine Whalen '15 (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and Clara Tondato Da Ruos '17 (Milan, Italy) came in a tie for 19th in women's sabre, and Signe Ferguson '18 (Wilmington, Del.) placed 23rd in women's epee.
In 2014, Brown sent four student-athletes to NCAAs, and in 2013 the team qualified two fencers to the championships. Brown sent a school-record six competitors to the national tournament in 2012.
NFC MEN'S CHAMPIONS
Brown men's fencing won the Northeast Fencing Conference title in 2015-16, finishing 10-0 in league play. In the combined standings, the Bears came in third with an 18-3 mark while the women's side placed fourth with a 9-3 record.
Individually, senior Simon Jones (Louisville, Colo.) led all fencers in men's epee with a 24-4 (85.7 percent) record. Classmate Kyle Kennedy (Wall, N.J.) topped the men's foil standings with a 24-1 (96.0 percent) record. Sophomore Signe Ferguson (Wilmington, Del.) led the Brown women with a 21-4 (84.0 percent) mark in women's epee for second place in that weapon's standings.
Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After the round-robin, the top-four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with the winners fencing to determine first and second places, and the non-advancing fencers being awarded a tie for third place.
An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships.
