Brown Fencers Complete Day One of NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three of Brown's four fencers who qualified for the 2014 NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Championships competed at French Fieldhouse on Thursday in the first three rounds of women's sabre, epee and foil. In sabre, senior Christine Whalen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) sits in 11th place and classmate Caitlin Taylor (Elk Grove, Calif.) stands in 16th, while senior Kathryn Hawrot (Barrington, R.I.) is in 21st in women's epee.

Whalen posted the best showing of the trio of Bears, winning nine of 15 bouts for a +6 differential. Taylor earned six wins while Hawrot picked up three victories to push Brown to 13th place in the team standings.

Rounds 4-5 of the women's weapons will begin at 9 a.m. tomorrow and the Championships Bouts will commence at 1:30 p.m. Live coverage of the semifinal and championship rounds can be seen on ESPN3.
