Fencing Poised for Brandeis Invitational on Sunday
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Following back-to-back first place finishes at the Big One and Northeast Fencing Conference #1, the Brown fencing team will close out the 2013 calendar year at the Brandeis Invitational in Waltham, Mass., on Sunday. The Bears are slated to begin competition at 12 p.m. against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Fencing Goes Unbeaten at NFC Opener
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior captain Kathryn Hawrot (Barrington, R.I.) and freshman Alex Palabrica (Los Angeles, Calif.) went undefeated in women’s foil and men’s saber, respectively, to help the Brown fencing team go unbeaten at the first Northeast Fencing Conference meet on the season on Saturday at the Olney-Margolies Athletics Center. The women’s side swept the competition, 5-0, while the men finished 4-0.

Fencing Repeats at Big One Champs in Season Opener
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Senior captain Kathryn Hawrot (Barrington, R.I.) took the gold medal in the women’s foil for the third time in her career to lift the Brown fencing team to a repeat first-place finish at the season-opening Big One at Smith College on Saturday, which featured over 20 colleges from throughout the region. The Bears were the champions of the day, taking away 13 medals. This narrowly eclipsed Brandeis, which won 12 medals, and the third- and fourth-place finishers, Sacred Heart and MIT, which won six and five medals, respectively. Brown scored two gold medals, two silver, three bronze, and six other medals for fourth- through eighth-place finishes.

Fencing Ready to Open 2013-14 Season at Saturday’s Big One
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Inspired by strong representation at last year’s NCAA Fencing Championships as well as the Northeast Regionals and Ivy League Round Robin Tournament, the Brown fencing team will stand en garde for the first time this season at Saturday’s the Big One, the annual season-opening individual meet held by Smith College. The Bears will head to Northampton, Mass., in hopes of starting the year as strong as 2012, which saw Brown take home 11 medals and finish in first place overall at the kick-off event.
