CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS - Brown started off the 2013 Ivy League Fencing Round Robin tournament today, hosted by Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The men currently stand in fifth place, after losing to Columbia, 20-7, and to Princeton, 16-11. The women are tied for fourth with Penn, having lost to Columbia, 19-8, and Princeton, 21-6, before beating Cornell in a close match, 15-12.
Sophomore Barrett Weiss (Barrington, RI) led the men's foil squad with a record of 3-3 on the day. Junior Joshua Grill (Pittsburgh, PA) and senior James Golin (Newton, MA) also had strong performances that they'll be looking to build on tomorrow in the second round of the tournament. As for the women's foil, junior Kathryn Hawrot (Barrington, RI) went 4-5, senior Avery Nackman (Katonah, NY) went 3-6 and rookie Audrey Lee went 0-9 in her first rounds of Ivy League Championship play.
In the men's epee, senior Kelly Mcguire (Park City, UT) had a strong record on the day for the Bears, finishing 4-2. Rookie Simon Jones (Louisville, CO), junior Benjamin McDonald (Woodlands, TX) and sophomore Alexander Chiclana (Cambridge, MA) round out the rest of the men's epee squad, that will be looking for victory in tomorrow's matches. Senior Cory Abbe (Scappoose, OR) and junior Laney Caldwell (Indian Springs, AL) led the women's epee with records of 5-4. Their efforts were supported by sophomore Hailey Huddleston (New York, NY) and rookie Yoojin Cha (Seoul, Korea), who went 2-6 and 0-1, respectively.
Junior Nick Deak (San Diego, CA) was the leading star for Bruno in the men's saber, earning a 4-2 record on the day and going 3-0 against Princeton. Sophomore Christine Whalen (San Juan Capistrano, CA) starred for the women's saber with a 5-4 record, followed by sophomore Samantha Gross (Newton, MA) at 3-6 and rookie Lauren Altman (New City, NY) who went 2-7.
The Bears will pick up with Round 2 on Sunday at 10 am.
